A Citizens' Assembly for Vancouver
Thanks for taking your first critical step in supporting Assemble Vancouver’s mission to improve our democracy by putting real decision making power in the hands of the citizens of Vancouver in two steps:
- Up until the election in 2026 we build a coalition of informed and committed people of all political stripes who encourage potential candidates for the city council to commit to creating a citizens' assembly and honouring its recommendations (as has already been done in Burnaby and New Westminster).
- After the election our new city council will form the assembly (of about 50 citizens selected at random - not political insiders or lobbyists) which will learn about, deliberate on and recommend solutions to some of the cities most pressing issues - free from the influence of special interests. The council will then have plenty of time to act on these recommendations.
Use the navigation links below to find out more:
- This is the Start page. No need to go there now as you're already here ;-)
- The Learn page explains what a citizens' assembly is, how their members are selected, their education and deliberation processes - and how they have proven their value to 100s of governments around the world
- The Act page provides more details about our campaign, how you can participate in a short mini assembly to better understand the processes and build commitment to help grow the movement across Vancouver
- The Discover page keeps you up to date about our campaign's progress, what we're learning about the issues - and soon details of the candidates and other stakeholders we are engaging to bring our collective influence to bear.
- The Ask page provides answers to those "how do we avoid this problem" questions you might have about selecting, operating or acting on the recommendations of a citizens' assembly.
The navigation links can also be accessed at the top of this page (or in the top right menu on your phone).
